چکیده

We compare two forms of hybrid genetic search. The rst uses Lamarckian evolution, while the second uses a related method where local search is employed to change the tness of strings, but the acquired improvements do not change the genetic encoding of the individual. The latter search method exploits the Baldwin eeect. By modeling a simple genetic algorithm we show that functions exist where simple genetic algorithms without learning as well as Lamar-ckian evolution converge to the same local optimum, while genetic search utilizing the Baldwin eeect converges to the global optimum. We also show that a simple genetic algorithm exploiting the Baldwin eeect can sometimes outperform forms of Lamarckian evolution that employ the same local search strategy.

Myths and Legends of the Baldwin Effect

This position paper argues that the Baldwin effect is widely misunderstood by the evolutionary computation community. The misunderstandings appear to fall into two general categories. Firstly, it is commonly believed that the Baldwin effect is concerned with the synergy that results when there is an evolving population of learning individuals. This is only half of the story. The full story is m...

Lamarckian Evolution and the Baldwin Effect in Evolutionary Neural Networks

Resumen— Hybrid neuro-evolutionary algorithms may be inspired on Darwinian or Lamarckian evolution. In the case of Darwinian evolution, the Baldwin effect, that is, the progressive incorporation of learned characteristics to the genotypes, can be observed and leveraged to improve the search. The purpose of this paper is to carry out an experimental study into how learning can improve G-Prop gen...

Understanding the Role of Learning in the Evolution of Busy Beavers: a Comparison Between the Baldwin Effect and a Lamarckian Strategy

In this paper we study how individual learning interacts with an evolutionary algorithm in its search for good solutions to the Busy Beaver problem. Two learning strategies, the Baldwin Effect and Lamarckian learning, are compared with an extensive set of experiments. Results show that the Baldwin Effect is less sensitive to specific issues concerning the definition of the learning model and it...

Beyond the Baldwin Effect: James Mark Baldwin’s ‘social heredity’, epigenetic inheritance and niche-construction

James Mark Baldwin is remembered today almost exclusively for his paper ‘A New Factor in Evolution’ (Baldwin, 1896a). The new factor, which he called ‘organic selection’ and which later became known as the Baldwin effect, was a process that could cause ‘accomodations’ the acquired adaptive responses of individual organisms to become hereditary. ‘Accomodations’ include physiological adaptations ...
